Artist's Statement

For Kathy Leland, art is the path to revelations about life, God, and the meaning of it all. The meaning of any created work lives as much in the soul of the one who views it as in the soul of the one who created it. Every artist dips her brush into her own soul, painting her own nature into her pictures. How better to know God than to paint what He's created? Kathy paints to glorify God, believing it to be a gift He gave her — one she discovered in 1971.

Kathy loves the rich mobility of oils; they speak to her storytelling style, each piece a vignette of life. Most recently, she has been painting from her own drawings, returning to the nostalgia of simpler days, when innocence and respect were valued the way a child sees life. There's a naivety in some of her work, but that's part of its charm — a reminder of the wonderful colors that can enrich our lives and spirits. Her talent also extends to abstracts, landscapes, and still lifes.

Kathy was born in San Francisco and raised in the San Fernando Valley. She earned a Master of Arts degree in psychology in 1969, and nearly 22 years later turned to nursing, earning her RN in 1991.

Kathy has painted many commissions for both public and private collections and has exhibited in numerous galleries throughout Southern California.

She loves color and the rich mobility of oils with all their imagery, and agrees with Thoreau who said, “This world is but a canvas to our imagination.”
